How many people have followed a forbidden fantasy into the dark, and found themselves imprisoned by what they were doomed to desire? The men descended the stairs and stood in silence, they eyed the woman standing cuffed and trembling in her white silk slip. There were 5 of them. They exuded violence and smelled of strong drink. The Gothic Girl didn’t speak. She turned away and took a seat at the bottom of the stairs. The men huddled around the wife; touching, groping, squeezing, probing. They tore off her slip and unhooked the chain from her cuffs. The woman tensed but she didn’t resist. They removed the ball gag. The only sound that came from between her lips was rapid, deep breaths. The men started talking amongst themselves, joking, laughing, making degrading references to the woman.
One of the men looked over at the Gothic Girl and asked, “Can we take the cuffs off?” She shook her head. The man turned back to the woman and ordered her to get on her knees. The woman complied. The Gothic Girl grabbed the wife by the hair, brought her back to the circle and threw the handcuffed woman to the ground. She landed flat on her face with a sickening crack. The Gothic Girl held her revolver to one of the men’s head, cocked the hammer and pointed at the wife. The tall man said, “Fuck her nigga, shit!” The man quickly undid his pants and got on top of the woman. The other four men backed toward the stairs. I went over and got Evelyn’s gun.
One of the men said, ‘Fuck this, I’m getting out of here.” He looked to his partners for agreement and support. The room was filled with thunder once again. The man stood there for awhile before he fell, his eyes crossed downward as if he was trying to peer into the large hole right next to his nose. I pointed Evelyn’s pistol at the other three men at the foot of the stairs. They raised their hands. The fucking man stopped fucking and screamed out “Shit! Shit!” The Gothic Girl kicked him in the ribs.
Robert appeared at the top of the stairs. He pumped the 12-gauge that he held in his hands. The sound brought out a facial tick in one of the men’s faces. The fucking man stopped, got up and pulled up his pants. The Gothic Girl pointed at the man with the facial tick, then pointed at the wife. I looked at the bodies of Evelyn and the husband. They laid side-by-side. I wondered if Evelyn had lost her mind, or if she knew the outcome and viewed it as her only means of escape.
The man with the facial tick came quick, he took his place next to his friends even quicker. The Gothic Girl pointed at the men, then at a corner behind the bondage table. The woman just clenched her jaw and stared at the Gothic Girl with wide, pleading eyes. The Gothic Girl pulled her mask and goggles off. She looked the woman in the eyes and asserted: “If you make one fucking sound, my friend is going to blow your face off with that shotgun. If I have to tell you to do something more than once, I cut something off.” She held a knife under the woman’s nose. “Are we clear?” The woman pressed her lips together, wrinkled her brow and gave a slight nod. After putting the woman in the trunk, the Gothic Girl, Robert and I all got in the car, exited the garage and melted into the darkness.
I got lost in the sights and sounds of the freeway at night. The red tail-lights, the horns, the line of headlights that appear as an endless beaded, river of white light. I asked out loud, “Why did we bring the woman with us?”
She solemnly replied, “I lost Evelyn.”
“What does that have to do with the woman in the trunk?”
She lit a cigarette. “I need someone to take her place.”
I sat quietly and let those words sink in. The shotgun was covered with a blanket under my feet. Would I be quick enough to grab it, point it and shoot in the confines of the back seat? I sat behind Gothic Girl. I figured I could probably get a shot off on Robert in the driver’s seat. However, we would have crashed on the freeway with a handcuffed woman in the trunk. She turned in her seat to look at me. She slowly shook her head. She stared at me while she took long, slow drags off her cigarette. “I’m going to drop you off someplace safe.”
My heart pounded as panic set in. ’What do you mean you’re dropping me off? I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“You’re doing something wrong right now. I do not have time to deal with you right now and I need to know where you are and what you’re doing at all times. I’ll come back for you in awhile.”

“Don’t worry about that Clarence. I’ll be leaving you with my family and close friends. They’ll take care of you and you’ll have a good time.
